When to Replace Your Tyres in the UK — Legal Tread Depth & Safety Guide
Published June 2026 — 6 min read
Your tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road. That makes them the single most important safety component on your vehicle. Yet many UK drivers don't know when their tyres need replacing — or worse, they push them past the legal limit without realising the risks. Here's everything you need to know about when to replace your tyres, how to check them yourself, and what the law says.
The UK Legal Minimum: 1.6mm Tread Depth
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for car tyres is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. That's the law — and it's not a guideline. If your tread is below 1.6mm in any part of that central band, your tyres are illegal. The penalty is severe: a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points on your licence — per tyre. That means four bald tyres could cost you £10,000 and a 12-point driving ban.
But here's what most people don't realise: 1.6mm is the legal minimum, not the safe minimum. Most tyre manufacturers and safety organisations recommend replacing tyres at 3mm. At 1.6mm, your stopping distance in wet conditions is significantly longer — up to 44% more than a tyre with 3mm of tread. That extra distance could be the difference between stopping in time and a collision.
How to Check Your Tread Depth with a 20p Coin
You don't need specialist tools to check your tread depth. The 20p coin test is a quick, reliable method that every driver should know:
- Take a 20p coin and insert it into the main tread grooves of your tyre at several points around the circumference.
- If the outer band of the 20p coin is visible when the coin is inserted, your tread is below 1.6mm — the tyre is illegal and must be replaced immediately.
- If the outer band is fully hidden by the tread, you're above the legal limit — but check multiple grooves and both edges of the tyre.
For a more precise measurement, you can buy a tread depth gauge from any motor factors for a few pounds. Check your tread depth at least once a month and always before a long journey.
Tread Wear Indicators (TWI Bars)
Every modern tyre has built-in tread wear indicators — small raised bars moulded into the base of the tread grooves, usually marked by a small triangle or "TWI" on the tyre sidewall. When the tread surface wears down to the same level as these bars, the tyre has reached the 1.6mm legal limit. If you can see the TWI bars sitting flush with the tread surface, it's time to replace the tyre — no measurement needed.
Other Reasons to Replace Your Tyres
Tread depth isn't the only reason to replace a tyre. Even if your tread is legal, you should replace a tyre immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Cracks or cuts in the sidewall — these weaken the tyre structure and can lead to a sudden blowout.
- Bulges or blisters — a bulge on the sidewall means the internal structure has failed. This tyre could burst at any moment.
- Age over 6 years — rubber degrades over time, even if the tread looks fine. Check the DOT code on the sidewall for the manufacture date. Tyres older than 6 years should be inspected by a professional, and most should be replaced by 10 years regardless of appearance.
- Uneven wear — if one edge of the tyre is worn more than the other, you may have a tracking or suspension issue. Replace the tyre and get the alignment checked.
- Vibration or noise — unusual vibration through the steering wheel or a humming noise at speed can indicate internal tyre damage or a shifted belt.
MOT Implications
Tyres are a major part of the MOT test. An MOT tester will check tread depth, condition, and tyre type across all four wheels. If any tyre is below 1.6mm, has a serious cut, bulge, or structural damage, or if the tyres on the same axle are of different construction types (cross-ply vs radial), your vehicle will fail its MOT. A tyre-related MOT failure means you cannot legally drive the vehicle until the issue is fixed — except to a pre-booked MOT retest or tyre fitting appointment.
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
Tyre replacement isn't something to put off. Driving on illegal or damaged tyres puts you, your passengers, and everyone else on the road at risk. The financial penalty is steep, but the real cost could be far worse. Check your tyres regularly, replace them before they hit the legal limit, and if you're unsure, get a professional opinion.
